Audrey L. Baker, age 89, of Erie, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at St. Paul’s Nursing Home. Audrey was born in Detroit, MI on June 21, 1926 a daughter of the late Lillian Roegge and Roland Loeffler.
She graduated from Michigan State University in 1948. She worked as an Art Teacher in Dallas, TX where she met her husband Jim. Upon returning to Erie, she was a Republican Committee woman and a Constable of Elections. She worked the polls for 40 years. In addition, Audrey was a School PTA President in Millcreek.
Audrey was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for more than 60 years where the nursery is named after her the “Audrey Baker Nursery.” Audrey was also a member of the Presque Isle Garden Club where she served as President, Westwood Tennis Club, the Erie Republican Party and the walkers at Presque Isle for 20 plus years.
She traveled to many countries with her husband James and continued her love of travel after his death. God directed Audrey’s life and she loved her children and grandchildren very much. She also had artistic flair and loved to make wreaths and bake pies. She was a dog lover and her faithful companions were always by her side. She had a very outgoing personality and enjoyed many athletic activities.
The family would like to thank St. Paul Homes in Greenville, and Independence Court and Health South for the wonderful care their mother received.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouse, James D. Baker in 1987, a sister and brother-in-law, Rae Annette and Glenn Diebert and two brothers, Roland and Dr. Donald F. Loeffler.
Audrey is survived by four children, Roland R. Baker and his wife Merideth and James Scott Baker, all of Austin, TX, Kathie B. Dzuricky and her husband Michael of Erie and Becky B. Leary and her husband Nathan of Greenville, PA; two sister-in-law’s, Jean Baker of West Lafayette, IN and Joan Loeffler of Port Clinton, OH; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Baker, Natalie Baker, James C. Baker, Michael Dzuricky, Kathryn Dzuricky, Anna Dzuricky, Ethan Leary, Paige Leary and Cameron Leary and nine dear nieces and nephews and their children.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue) on Friday from 3-7pm and are invited to attend a service at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 14 East 38th Street, Erie, PA 16504 on Saturday at 11am with Pastor Julia Frasier from St. Paul’s officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Presque Isle Partnership, 301 Peninsula Dr, #2, Erie, PA 16505.
