Arthur L. Wagner age 103, formerly of Erie, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022 at Rolling Field’s Senior Living in Conneautville, PA
He was born in Erie, on October 8, 1918 a son of the late John G. Wagner and Grace V. (Alden) Wagner.
Art was a graduate of Academy High School and Erie Commercial College. Upon graduating, he went to work for IBM and married his beloved wife Merriam on June 14, 1941, after which he went on to serve in the United States Army as a Lieutenant. After his return Art continued to work for IBM for over 32 years.
The birth of his son created a spark and set events in motion that caused him and Merriam to study the Bible with Art’s mother and subsequently dedicate his life to his God Jehovah on August 28, 1954.
Over the many years of dedicated service to his God, he and Merriam helped dozens of individuals and couples to become Jehovah’s friend and learn spiritual truths from God’s word. He served as a spiritual shepherd and overseer in many congregations including Hamburg, NY, Erie, PA and Western Pennsylvania. He was also privileged to deliver talks to hundreds of attendees at assemblies and conventions of Jehovah’s witnesses in the tristate area for many years.
Serving as a congregation elder for many years, he always sought to be merciful and kind when dealing with others. This endeared him to many. He always found ways to talk to others about his God. Jehovah, and to teach them the truth found in the Bible, even in the last months of his life. He was even able to use the website JW.org, and the JWLibrary app to share videos and Bible based publications with others.
Art also enjoyed spending time with his family at his wilderness cottage in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada.
In addition to his parents, he is proceeded in death by his wife of 54 years, Merriam Miller Wagner. At the age of 82, he married Shirley E. Grace in September 2000, and after 21 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on January 27, 2022.
Survivors include his son Jeffrey Wagner (Pat), Girard, PA, grandsons Matthew (Martina) Wagner, Saegertown, PA and David (Lori) Wagner, Knox, PA and great grandsons Daniel Wagner, Sedona, AZ and James Wagner, Know, PA.
He is also survived by two step-daughters, Cheryl (Grace) Veith (Jay), Julie (Grace) Zielenski (Mark) and a step-son Merle (Sonny) Grace (Julie), as well as several step-grandchildren.
Services were held at the convenience of the family with burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Burton Funeral Home Girard.
