Antonio (Tony the tailor) Carbonelli, age 86, of Erie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. He was born in San Lucido Cosenza, Italy on October 27, 1931, the son of the late Paolo and Rosa Abate Carbonelli.
Antonio came to America in 1956 and began working as a tailor at Mehler’s Men Shop and he would be known to all as “Tony the tailor”. After spending over 30 years with Mehlers, he then went to work at Erie’s General Electric plant until his retirement.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Nouva Aurora club.
Besides his parent, Antonio was preceded in death by two brothers, Luigi and Giovanni Carbonelli.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Domenica Abate Carbonelli; a son, James Carbonelli and his wife Kimberly and two daughters; Rosamaria Gorring and her husband David and Lidia Ropiecki and her husband Bill, all of Erie. He is the brother of Serafina Caputo of Erie and the grandfather of Tiffany Kerstetter (Leonard), Heather Skrzypczak (James), Alicia Miazga (Kevin), Julian and Jaydan Gorring, and Nicole and Joe Ropiecki. He is the great-grandfather of Ashley and James Kerstetter, and Savannah, Morgan, and Carter Skrzypczak. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Antonio’s family would like to thank Senior Helpers and LECOM Hospice for the wonderful care and comfort that they provided.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Friday from 2-5 & 7-9 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Saturday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary mausoleum.
