Alton Edward St. George, 90, of Erie, died Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Presque Isle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born August 14, 1924, in Erie, son of the late Frank and Antoniette Martinson St. George. A graduate of Strong Vincent High School and Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, he was co-owner of the St. George Funeral Home for forty years retiring in 1992. He was a veteran of WW II having served with the U.S. Army as a Private First Class Surgical Technician with the Medical Detachment 1267th Combat Engineer Battalion in Central Europe. He received the American Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Stars. Mr. St. George was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, and was a member of the Erie-Crawford County, Western Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania and National Funeral Directors Associations. His hobbies included football and golf and watching tennis on television.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James S. St. George and two sisters, Frances E. Carbone and Clair Lorenzi of Pittsburgh. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ruth M. Konieczny St. George; a son, The Right Rev. Monsignor James St. George of Blue Bell, PA; a daughter, Andrea R. Sprague and husband Glenn of Erie; a brother, Hubert A. St. George and wife Julie of Erie; and two grandsons, Stephen and Matthew Karsh of Erie.
Services are private at the convenience of the family with interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Monsignor James St. George, son of the deceased, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Bishop’s Fund, Saint Miriam Pro Cathedral, 475 Norristown Road, Blue Bell, Pennsylvania 19422. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street.
