Allison “Al” Taylor, age 102, of Erie passed away Saturday July 2nd, 2016 at the PA Soldier’s and Sailor’s Home in Erie.
Mr. Taylor was born December 23, 1913 in Westfield, New York son of the late Emma Bunneville and Edward W. Taylor. He attended Strong Vincent High School before joining the U. S. Army.
Mr. Taylor was a very humble veteran, serving in the U. S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He served in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns earning the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal along with 5 Bronze Stars. He also served in the Army National Guard for many years.
In December 2015 at age 101, Al was honored and presented with the French Chevalier of the Legion of Honor Award, given to WWII veterans who have served on French soil. Congressman Mike Kelley said “Men like Mr. Taylor are national treasures and unmatched role models for every Generation”.
Al and his three brothers devoted their lives to boating and boat building. All of them worked for Paasch Marine Service and Lund boat Works both of Erie. Al loved sail boats and his work was also his hobby.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Cecelia; his daughter Lenore Borland; three brothers Warren, Leon and Eddie Taylor and two sisters Isabelle Mang and Evelyn Fails.
He is survived by his niece Judy Oncea and her husband Jack and his nephew Ken Fails and his wife Helen, both of Erie; a sister-in-law Carol Taylor of SC and several other nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church 950 West 7th Street, Erie 16502 on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of the service there at 11:00 am with Pastoral Assistant Ron King officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 West 26th Street Erie PA 16506.
Memorials may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for the Restoration of the Stained Glass Windows Fund.
