Alice R. White, age 80, of Erie, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Saint Vincent Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, February 14, 1944, to the late Alexander D. and Alice V.R. White.
Alice was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School, class of 1962. She worked many years at Stairways in various departments and finished her career there as a social worker. In the ‘70s, she was a member of the Erie chapter of NOW and she earned a red belt from the Billy Blanks School of Tae Kwon Do. She enjoyed gardening and filled her house with plants, which visitors often praised. Alice’s mother (Alice Sr.) was an astounding cook and passed her skills down to Alice (Jr.). With this love of cooking and of eating good food, she continued the tradition by sharing the knowledge with her own children.
An amazing artist with unbounded creativity rarely seen elsewhere, she made all birthdays and holidays magical by adding special touches by creating things like homemade pajamas to hand-made birthday cards. Alice enjoyed traveling, taking walks, reading, doing puzzles, and was always interested in learning new games. She was a fantastic card player. If you ever played against her, you probably lost. It was not unheard of for her to be playing 45s into the night, filling the house with music. She herself was a musician with the ability to play a variety of instruments.
Alice, who was very active in politics, always felt people had the right to make choices for themselves and be allowed their freedoms. As an animal activist, she contributed to many animal charities and had many pets throughout her life, including a horse named Robin and a Burmese cat named Sunny. She was very passionate about the environment and was always ready for an adventure to Presque Isle to enjoy a chocolate malt and look for wildlife, especially birds.
Alice loved being with her family and friends and was a very kind soul who welcomed everyone. She made everyone feel like family and always had an ear to listen. Compassionate and understanding of all people and respecting character first and foremost, she encouraged people to follow their hearts and to pursue their dreams. She passed the importance of these things to her family, who will continue to honor her principles. Both witty and brilliant, she could make anyone laugh. She was a beautiful woman, inside and out. There was - and never will be -anyone like her. Her spirit, her kindness, her intelligence, her wit, nourished and inspired everyone who knew her. We, her family, devastated by this overwhelming loss, must now try to comprehend life without her.
Alice is survived by her children, Jill Houston (Mike), Alexander Hoover, and Zachary Hoover. She is further survived by her granddaughter Alexandra Meyers (Justin), her great granddaughter Nova Meyers, her sister Mary White, ex-husband Robert Hoover, and cats, Ory and Lilly.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date, at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Service Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th Street, Erie.
