Alice King Wallingford, 82, formerly of Louisville, KY, passed away Friday, April 17, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Fairview following a brief illness.
She was born on January 25, 1933, in Washington, DC. to the late Howard Allen and Irene Kushner King.
She graduated from Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis, and Indiana University in Bloomington, in 1953. Alice taught school in Monterey CA, was a substitute teacher in the western suburbs of Chicago, and ended her teaching career with the Chicago Public Schools. She was an avid IU basketball fan. “Go Hoosiers”.
She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority; Association of American University Women; League of Women Voters, Welcome Wagon; and the “Flamingoes“ in Louisville, KY. She enjoyed traveling, drawing portraits, painting watercolors, swimming, playing bridge, and precious time with her grandchildren.
Alice volunteered at the Louisville Nature Center and the SeniorCare Experts of Louisville, as well as the Kentucky Center for the Arts and the Actors Theater in Louisville.
She was a loyal and devoted friend of Dr. Bob and Bill W. for over 35 years.
She was a lover of dogs, especially her Brussels Griffin, Roxie.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by an infant son and her companion for over 20 years, Leonard Pokallus.
Alice is survived by her children: two sons: W. Allen Wallingford and his wife Libby; Brian King Wallingford and his wife Elizabeth; a daughter Jane Wallingford Levin and her husband Howard; 8 grandchildren: Madeline, Myles, Maxwell, Scott, Gregory, Charles, Andrew, and Jack; and two step grandchildren: Sam and Emily.
Family and friends may attend a memorial service at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th St. on Saturday, May 2 from 1pm until the time of sharing at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the name of Alice Wallingford and sent to: Louisville Nature Center. 3745 Illinois Ave., Louisville, KY. 40213, or to a charity of one’s choosing.
