Alice Margaret Ebert Mountjoy and Donald Arthur Mountjoy passed away hours apart on February 23, 2021, from COVID at the St. Thomas Ascension Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They were comforted and cared for by loving family members and hospital staff who eased their journey to be together with their Lord and Savior.
Alice was born in Erie, PA on March 10, 1944, daughter of the late Earl and Agnes (Bessetti) Ebert, Sr. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Earl Ebert, Jr. She was a graduate of McDowell High School in Erie, Pa. Don was born in Sharon Pa, on April 25, 1943, son of the late Homer and Florence (Gessner) Mountjoy. He was a graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, NJ.
Alice and Don are survived by their two daughters, Deborah Roberts (Robert Bolinger), of Murfreesboro, TN and Katherine Cioffi, of Naperville, IL (former spouse Chris), and five grandchildren: Jordan (Jordan Kauwell) and Zachary Roberts, and Max, Nick, and Alexis Cioffi.
They are also survived by Alice’s sister, Aimee Cromarty (former spouse Neal), of State College, Pa, and Don’s three sisters: Marilyn (the late Ros), of Gainesville, Va, Pamela (Marcus) Monroe, of Jamestown, MO, Cheryl (Larry) Long, of Round Rock, TX, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Alice and Don met in 1963 when attending Clarion University. They married on June 6, 1964 and over the next 56 years together created a life and family in the Erie community. Don was a proud IBEW Local 56 union electrician and NECA member. In the 1980’s Don and Alice risked all they had to build Newco Electric Company. Under Don’s leadership and hard work, Newco grew to be known as a reputable and ethical business in three states.
Alice enjoyed the beauty of nature, gardening, and flowers; and shared the results with neighbors and friends. One of her favorite hobbies was to feed and watch the variety of birds that would come back to their yard every spring. Don had a true interest in woodworking and was able to build a beautiful shop with his son-in-law over the past year. Don was also a true lover of animals, and we are certain he is now reunited with his best friends, including dogs Caz, Lucy, and Tres.
Throughout their lives Alice and Don served others in a variety of ways. These included Don’s tenure as a Millcreek Township School Board member, providing countless hours of labor and time building the Community Country Day School, and Alice’s work towards equal rights for women. Their true contributions anonymously and directly helped others who were struggling, as they believed it was a privilege to share their blessings to ease the journey of others.
Alice and Don’s greatest source of joy was their family. Alice was Debbie and Katie’s number one fan at sporting and academic events, and they supported and sacrificed to ensure Debbie and Katie obtained a college education. Alice and Don loved and supported their grandchildren without limits, and their values and legacy will live on through each of them.
