Alice R. DiSanto, age 96, of Erie passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge peacefully and surrounded by her family at her side. She was born April 2, 1927, in Erie, PA. She was the daughter of the late John (Giovanni) and Louisa (Cupello) Turano.
Alice was a lifelong resident of Erie and graduated from East High School. She met her husband, Armand at the Talon Zipper Company, and then married on November 4, 1950, at Saint Patrick Church, in Erie. After their marriage, Alice and her husband lived at 223 German St. where they lived in a four apartment flat. Once the family grew, they moved to West 35th St. where they would live for forty plus years. Many memories were made there with loving, caring neighbors. After the passing of her husband Armand, Alice eventually moved to Mercy Terrace Apartments and lived there for sixteen plus years. She enjoyed playing cards, monthly dinners, listening to musical entertainment, and attending daily and Sunday mass in the chapel. Alice was retired from the Erie School District where she had worked in housekeeping. She was a past member of the Italian American Women’s Society.
She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Where she was a devoted member of their prayer line for several years. She had a deep faith in God, and her life was an example of her faith by her kind words, and loving actions. Anyone that knew her would also remember her by her gracious smile.
Alice was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She adored her children and grandchildren and enjoyed being part of their lives. Most of her life, was spent in the kitchen cooking and baking Italian dishes. As Alice would say ¨non chiedere se lo vogliono, basta metterlo sul tavolo.¨ (Don’t ask if they want it, just put it on the table.)
Those many dishes were loved by her family and friends. She passed on her appreciation of Italian cooking and baking traditions to her children and grandchildren. Including pasta dishes, Easter pizza, artichokes, Italian cookies, and many batches of pizzelles for friends and family.
Alice was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Armand “Ceci” DiSanto; a son Dominic DiSanto; two brothers, George and Armand Turano, and four sisters; Celia Messina, Delphine Novello, Eleanor Oblywanik, and Mary Mentley.
Alice is survived by a son, Dennis DiSanto and his wife Roberta and a daughter, Mary Louise DiSanto- Schultz, all of Erie. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Beth (Sean) MacIsaac, Joe (Mary) DiSanto, Sarah (Nate) Parker, Angela (John) ReKasie, and Olivia Schultz; a sister-in-law, Delores Turano; a cousin, Madeline Lynch, and sixteen great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge and also the staff of Interim Nursing including Lynn, Kat, and Becky for their wonderful care and compassion.
