Alex Stephen Masi, age 32, lost his battle with addiction on Friday, February 11, 2022 in the home he shared with his fiancée after an extended period of sobriety.
He was born in Erie on September 7, 1989, the son of Sharyn Ciccarella Masi and Jay Masi. Alex graduated from Cathedral prep in 2008 and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Penn State Behrend. He was a carpenter by trade and loved anything to do with wood-working or fixing things with his hands. He learned these skills from his best friend, Grandpa Dale, who preceded him in death by mere hours.
If you knew Alex, you knew what laughter was as he was often able to put a smile on anyone’s face especially those he loved. He loved to go to the beach with his fiancée Courtney and their dog Ellie to look for beach glass. He loved being on the water in any capacity including on his boat, the Sea Sprite, or jumping the waves on the lake on one of the many jet skis he had fixed. Family was important to Alex and when he met Courtney over 7 years ago he told her he and his family were a package deal because they were all very close and did everything together. It wasn’t long before Alex convinced his mother to allow Courtney to move in with them where they lived together in the home where he grew up. They were able to move out to make a home for themselves only 7 blocks away from his mother, who was his fiercest supporter.
In true Alex fashion, he proposed to Courtney at Cedar Point in front of a camera on the Millennium Force rollercoaster on September 27, 2020 with his brother Jay Michael and wife Stephanie riding in the seats in front of them. The first phone call made to share the good news was to his beloved grandparents, Dale and Sally Cage, who showed Alex never-ending love.
Alex is preceded in death by his grandpa Dale Cage, his grandfather Anthony Masi, his would-be father-in-law Von Lowe and his grandparents Dorothy and Paul Andrews.
Alex is survived by “his girls”, fiancée Courtney Lowe and their beloved dog, Ellie May Masi; parents, Sharyn Masi and Jay Masi (Leslie); brother, Jay Michael Masi (Stephanie); brother, Nicholas Masi; grandmother, Sally Cage; aunts, Cindy McKeown (Sean), Joy Malena (Frank), Melanie Schumacher (Bob), Lisa Seltzer (Alex), Vicki Albright (Craig); uncle Randy Ciccarella (Michelle). Alex is also survived by future mother-in-law Kim Lowe and many cousins that loved him.
Friends and Family may call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services 3801 W. 26th Street on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to a Funeral Mass on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter Cathedral 230 W. 10th Street, Erie.
In honor of Alex, donations can be made to the family to create a future scholarship fund to help recovering addicts, c/o Courtney Lowe, or to the Erie Animal Network where Alex and Courtney were proud volunteers and fundraisers.
