Albert (Al) DeSantis
Albert (Al) L. DeSantis, age 91, of Erie died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Forestview. He was born August 4, 1923 in Erie the son of the late Jerry and Clara Fatica DeSantis.
Al was a graduate of Syracuse University School of Journalism and served with the Army Air Corp during WW II.
In 1950 he joined the Times Publishing Co as a sports writer and worked there for35 years until retiring in 1985. Al covered all sports both local and nationally , but his favorite sport was baseball. Whether it was on the local diamonds or the major league level, he enjoyed the game. Throughout his life he had the opportunity to interview many outstanding professional athletes. Al was a former member of the Nouva Aurora club and had attended St. Paul’s RC Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Hilda Liberatore DeSantis; a brother, Sylvester DeSantis, and 3 sisters; Margaret, Elizabeth, and Eleanor DeSantis.
Al is survived by two sons, Jeffrey DeSantis and his wife Susan, and David DeSantis, all of Erie. He is the brother of Ann Schwab of Erie and the grandfather of Amy Rourke and her husband Mike of Greeley, CO; Lindsay DeSantis of New York City and Abby DeSantis of Erie. Also surviving are 2 great-grandsons, Jack and Connor along with many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Paul’s RC Church,1617 Walnut St. Private burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie VA Medical Center Patient Activities Fund, 135 E.38th St., Erie, PA 16504. Arrangements by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St.
